Atlantic Industrial Cleaners Helps the ‘Planet Solar’ Sail with the Sun

October 23rd, 2013

As Atlantic Canada’s leading maritime services provider, Atlantic Industrial Cleaners (AIC) routinely services all manner of marine vessels. In July, 2013, however, AIC had an opportunity to examine and service one of the most unique vessels in the world.

The Planet Solar, an innovative solar powered catamaran from France, is 30 metres long, 16 metres wide and has large sliding solar panels on its deck that can expand to more than 500 square metres.

Planet Solar can even store excess power generated from its solar panels in batteries in order to allow for movement at night or when the sun isn’t shining. This unique craft is capable of moving on battery power alone for approximately 72 hours!

Originally built to do an around-the-globe trip, the catamaran was turned over to science via the University of Geneva after it accomplished its original mission.

Because Planet Solar is powered by clean and renewable energy, researchers decided to use the vessel to collect data about the water and air quality along the Gulf Stream. Because engine contaminants and other emissions released from traditional vessels would render accurate data collection impossible, Planet Solar was perfectly suited for this important job.

The Planet Solar left France in March and has since made stops in Morocco, the West Indies, Miami, New York and Boston.

In July, its crew changed plans to go to Iceland and instead set sail for Canada’s east coast, eventually docking in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where Atlantic Industrial Cleaners’ experienced maritime services team had the opportunity to examine and service the ship.

As an organization that is steadfastly committed to environmental stewardship and a sustainable future, Atlantic Industrial Cleaners was pleased to have had the opportunity to work on this environmentally friendly and highly innovative vessel.
